About stye

What is a stye

A stye is a wart that appears on the edge of the eye. There are two types of warts on the edge of the eye: hordeolum and chalazion. Stye is an infection caused by bacteria entering the oil pits on the rim of the eye or the pores of the eyelashes and is usually treated with antibiotic eye drops. Chalazion, on the other hand, is a reservoir cyst formed when the oil secreted by the meibomian gland accumulates inside the tube called the meibomian gland, which secretes oil from the rim of the eye. If it's just a lump, you'll feel no pain, but if it becomes inflamed, it will become red, swollen, and painful. This is a painful time when everyone wants to see an ophthalmologist.

Causes of stye

The cause of chalazion is oil clogging in the eyelids. There is a tissue called the tarsal plate in the eyelid, and each eyelid has about 30 oil-producing tubes called meibomian glands. The oil is the oil of tears, and if there is not enough secretion, it will be dry eye. There are various causes of clogging, such as your constitution, making your eyelids dirty, wearing extensions and not washing them often, etc. However, since it is an oil, it becomes smooth and easy to secrete when warmed. If you tend to get clogged, we recommend using a hot eye mask. others,Self-care to prevent chalazionis summarized on the blog, so please refer to it.

Stye Treatment

If the lump is small, heat it up or do self-care as mentioned above to release the oil and make it smaller. If you have inflammation, first calm the inflammation with eye drops, ointments, or oral medications. When inflammation occurs, pus and dead bacteria remain as lumps (granulomas) even after the inflammation subsides. For granuloma, if a large lump remains, or if there is a lump that does not change in size for a long time, incision and removal of the lump should be considered. If you remove it by incision, it will be painful, so it will be done under local anesthesia. It may be performed from the skin surface or from the conjunctival surface behind the eyelid. If the skin wound is large, it may be sutured and the sutures will need to be removed at a later date. A lump doesn't just pop out, it's surrounded by inflamed tissue. Therefore, if you make an incision, it does not disappear completely the next day, but it has the effect of reducing the contents and speeding up absorption.
